Obama: Washington Needs to Be More Like California, by Matt Welch.

Yeah, that makes sense. Let's try to bankrupt the country the way Californians bankrupted their state.

California is in big trouble, and nobody even appreciates how bad it is, because they've been able to use gimmicky accounting to pretend their pension problem isn't as bad as it really is. There is one very simple and very easy way to ease public spending, stop pensions. Tomorrow. No new pensions. While the legallity of cutting spending to pensions that have already vested/to employees who ahve already been promised pensions is questionable (ultimate the legality won't matter when there simply isn't any money) any public employee hired from tomorrow moving forward does not get a pensions, they get 401k programs just like everyone else. public employee pensions are certainly not the only thing crippling the government, but it's the easiest to fix.
