At a town hall meeting for all american citizens last weekend I asked about self defense, and told my story from last ~october when i randomly got popped in the jaw in the middle of the night walking home with cedric. this one guy at the meeting repremanded me for not talking to the police, assuring me that it's not as hopeless as it seems.
so after the throat slitting incident i decided to talk to the police, and i went to ask my director how to go about that. she's always been the only one who could explain things to me in a way that made them understandable, and therefore acceptable.
her answer: "don't go to the police. the worst thing that can happen is they'll find the guys, who'll then come after you in even greater numbers."
is this the state of klaipeda? out of the general population of citizens, the greatest power is held by the hoodlums?
here's my answer: fuck the bullshit, i'm looking for work elsewhere. i'm willing to risk my job by making a stand on academic policy, but i didn't come to klaipeda to risk my life by being the only person here to make a stand on this type of shit.

i think your original thoughts on this topic were more on point...you don't go to the police because it's pretty much hopeless that they would find these guys. i figure your chances would have been far greater had you reported it immediately.
in any case, there is always the risk of retribution. i feel like this is a phenomenon in all places, with all levels of police intervention.
of course, retribution for reporting to the police is probably more dangerous when reporting on organized crime bosses rather than on hooligans who probably don't know you.
saying it's hopeless is like saying one vote doesn't make a difference.
and by reporting it i don't need them to find the guys, i just want them to assign more police to the areas of town i frequent.
yes, of course, but reporting such a crime in klaipeda is like voting republican in new york. it's hopeless, but it sends a message. it's not like new york will brighten up and become republican overnight, but continual voting in slightly larger number will help the revolution...
ps - you've been attacked an infiniti times more than i have been, and i live in the bronx...
the bronks isn't full of lugans. aand, i'll have to check on this, but i think klaipeda's more dangerous in general that the bronks, and if you focus on mugging of jpeople speaking english, think my balzaqis irrefutable.
did you ever find out about the crime rates. i have crime rates for the bronx if you can track down klaipeda's.
