I can't remember why I don't have a gun...

My favorite magicians reminded me in this intersting piece on Bullshit.

Scroll down to the Second Amendment paragraph of this page for a consice summary of how to reduce gun violence.

It is funny the way americans point to their founding fathers in so many ways and talk is if we should base our society on them, but then don't actually do it at all. The founding certainly wouldn't have ever wanted a government that restricts the ability of citizens to arm themselves, and fight the government. Of course they never would have wanted universal sufferage either. Nor did they have a problem with using the term God or swearing on a bible when they created the seperation of church and state. It's one thing if people openly say that the founding fathers were bunch of old men and we don't want to base our society on their thoughts or ideas but on our own. But nobody does that, they want to pick and choose what they remember and pretend the founding fathers would agree with everything we do now.

the things you mention that are "ignored" are not, loky; they've been changed by constitutional amendments (15 & 19). amendment 9 explains the process by which any "bunch of old men we don't want to base our society on" notion may be changed. but the right to bear arms amendment (2) has not been repealed; irrational limitations are therefore unconstitutional. if bearing arms is wrong (like the prohibition was), that amendment can be repealed, just as the 18th was.

This whole idea of gun control is especially important/prophetic given the events in virginia tech a week and a half ago. According to me econ prof, there have been statistical studies that show that allowing people to carrey concealed weapons reduces crime, and yet the response to this event will never the less be to try to increase gun control, which will have the opposite of the desired effect.
