Article of the Day
"Socialist" Charges from Bailout Republicans, by Eugene Robinson. I wonder if something like this could ever cause all the good Republicans left to defect to the Libertarian Party?
Republicans should just take up the principles of libertarians. As i've told many people there is a bizzare divide where conservatives believe in liberty in economic matters, and democrats believe in liberty in social matters. why can't we just have a party that believes in liberty. I'm afraid such a party couldn't get enough votes to exist. Without religious evangelicals republicans don't have enough votes to do anything. With the evangelicals they are essentially killing themselves as a party. If the democrats win this election like they think they are going to, republicans will have to entirely remake their party, and hopefully they can do it as libertarians.
What about right of centre Democrats and left of centre Republicans make a new party? The same could be said for the Liberal and Labor parties here in Australia...
The problem is that they are not necessarily to the center on the same issues. There are some who are fiscally conservative, but socially liberal, and vice versa. So just to take all the people closest to the center you would end up with a very jumbled party.
Also the people in power will not be leaving their positions. That means democrats. They have no incentive to leave, they hold all the cards, and at least for now can easily get reelected simply by claiming they are not republicans.
