Can Emoticons Be Professional?

Sometimes I feel the need to be somewhat playful corosponding with female colleagues, especially when I'm handing in work that I fear may contain mistakes, despite my high confidence level. Can I use this ":)"?

i don't know about that. i've used the (: thing in a professional setting, but only once or twice, and it was when i was in a rush and wanted to make sure my meaning wasn't misinterpreted as being an ass. it would've been better to just rewrite the email using my near-genius grasp of the english language to purvey my essence.

in your case, i would just write: "Jei rasite keleta laisvu valandu, gal galetumet paredaguoti mano slyksciai parasyta mesla? Jei viska graziai pataisysit, as gal net Jums leisciau joti mano zirga. :)"

:D that is funny. my confidence was hightened by this particular colleague also having used an emoticon last week, in reference to a professional retreat which i expect everybody expects to be more social than professional...and during which jinai gaus sansa joti mano zirga ;)

i just used one at work. but it wasn't to clarify the meaning for the person i was writing to. it was to clarify the meaning to management, in case they ever decided to go back and read it and think i was being serious:

I've stuck anything I've deemed deleteable in a folder called 'archives'. That way, that stuff don't mix around any more. I would like to take a day where we all dump the filing cabinets into the hallway, sweep it all out back and burn it. :)
